Job description


Recreational Therapist (RT):

● Candidate must be licensed
● Candidate must be a US Citizen or have a green card.

● Candidate must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American

Heart Association.
● Candidate must verify current PPD/TB test to include results.
● Candidate shall provide COVID-19 documentation

Recreational Therapist Requirements:

Education and Experience: Recreational Therapists need to have a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure. The degree must have an option and/or emphasis on therapeutic recreation and be approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Alternatively, they can have a bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited university and must be a certified recreation specialists (CTRS).
Certification: Recreation Therapists must be certified in recreation therapy as Certified
Therapeutic Recreation Therapists (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation
Certification (NCTRC).

Scope of care

The RT shall provide treatment interventions incorporating the four-step assessment process, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient treatment services. Employees at this level serve as Recreation therapists at the full performance level. They have a complete understanding of
Recreation therapy processes and procedures and require only general supervision when providing direct patient care. They exercise independent judgment, administer and interpret
Recreation therapy assessments and utilize clinical knowledge to develop unconventional assessment and interview approaches to elicit information effectively. They conduct, analyze, interpret, and report assessment data based on functional domains (cognitive, sensory, social, affective, physical, and leisure). The therapist constructs evidence-based recreation therapy interventions for treating patients with complex medical or mental health issues, such as polytrauma, traumatic brain injury (TBI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), spinal cord injury
(SCI), substance use disorder/addictions, severe mental illness (SMI), and hospice/palliative care. They recommend adaptation, modification, and/or assistive technology to meet a patient’s assessed needs and preferences in recreation therapy. Recreation therapists determine the effectiveness of protocols, modalities, and programs for targeted groups through quantitative analysis and identify potential risks and needs for adaptive interventions to facilitate improved biopsychosocial well-being. They participate in co-treatment opportunities, including but not limited to neurological rehabilitation, mental health recovery programs, and palliative care related to the symptoms of a terminal illness. Discharge analysis and planning are conducted for community needs. Recreation Therapists can treat outpatients, inpatients on the CLC, acute
Rehab and mental health inpatient ward.

To accomplish those objectives, the therapist will need to review paper and electronic records and note salient information, precautions, and contraindications. The RT will confer with significant others and interdisciplinary team members. The incumbent will need a good grasp of commonly used methods, procedures, and tests to derive accurate information.

The Recreation Therapist shall:

  • Evaluate and establish goals based on evaluation findings and develop treatment interventions.
  • Have knowledge of best practices and evidenced-based recreation therapy across multiple areas of practice.
  • Implement and modify treatment plans and goals as necessary throughout the course of treatment to ensure optimum outcomes.
  • Document patient care including assessments, progress notes, encounters, consults, care plans, and other reports as needed.
  • All forms of communication are appropriate and maintain a professional relationship with patients, their families, and visitors.
  • Respect and protect patient privacy at all times.
  • Implement treatment programs to meet established goals at each visit, taking into consideration each patient's particular rehabilitation problems.
  • Knowledge of how recreation therapy impacts revenue resource allocation as it relates to complex diagnoses, treatment, and diagnostic coding.
  • Participates in team conferences, rounds, discharge planning meetings, specialty clinics, other assigned medical meetings, recreation therapy, and in-services and meetings as directed.
